A Brief Overview of Reiki

Reiki is a healing technique that reduces stress and promotes relaxation, allowing one to tap into an unlimited supply of what is termed, "life force energy", to improve health and enhance the quality of life.

The belief of an unseen energy flowing through all living things that is connected directly to the quality of health has been considered part of the knowledge and wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. Recent science has been verifying forms of underlying energy that can be related to this "life force energy". Medical practitioners of allopathic medicine (MDs for instance) are beginning to consider the role Reiki and other forms of energy play in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master in a process called 'attunement'. Reiki is available to all who seek it and has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages, backgrounds, and belief systems all over the world. Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. Reiki can be transferred from a practitioner to another in person or at a distance.

The Reiki practitioner does not need to be present for the energy to be transferred; Reiki healings can be projected around the world. Many Reiki practitioners use email lists and other forms of Reiki energy request lists and healing groups for people to request Reiki energy to be focused on their request.

Definition of the Term Reiki

Rei

Reiki comes from the Japanese language, Rei has many different interpretations. The word Rei means universal and this is the definition most have accepted. However, this interpretation is a very general one, the ideograms of eastern language often have many levels of meaning, varying from the mundane to the highly esoteric.

Rei can be interpreted as universal, meaning that it is present everywhere, and available to everyone who seek it out. There is also research indicating that the character in the Japanese language representing Rei means supernatural knowledge, spiritual consciousness, and wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Self.

Ki

Ki is similar in meaning to what the Chinese call Chi. It is the energy part of Reiki, with Rei serving as the underlying consciousness of this 'life force energy' that promotes healing on every level.

Ki is the nonphysical energy that permeates all living thing; as long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it. Any depletion in this energy can leave one open and vulnerable to disease; when a living thing dies, its energy departs the physical vehicle.
